Organising the argument

Connectors (articulateurs) link the parts of a text and show its logic. They structure the presentation in stages: d’abord / tout d’abord, ensuite / puis, enfin / finalement; parallelism — d’une part… d’autre part.

D’abord, je présenterai le contexte. Ensuite, j’analyserai. Enfin, je conclurai.

Parallelism

D’une part, c’est utile ; d’autre part, c’est coûteux.

Addition

Le produit est cher. De plus, il est fragile. (Moreover…)

Contrast, illustration, conclusion

For nuance: contrast — en revanche, par contre, néanmoins, toutefois, cependant; illustration — par exemple, notamment, ainsi, en particulier; conclusion — en somme, bref, en conclusion, pour conclure, finalement.

💡⚠️ The register of connectors

Connectors differ in register: en outre, par ailleurs, néanmoins, toutefois are written/formal; en plus, du coup, en fait are colloquial. In an essay (DELF), prefer formal connectors and avoid repeating the same one.
