Les pronoms relatifs : qui, que, où
Linking two sentences into one
⚡Key points
qui = subject→L’homme qui parle. (qui + verb)
que = object (COD)→Le livre que je lis. (que + subject + verb)
où = place / time→La ville où j’habite.
que → qu’ before a vowel→le film qu’il aime
Relier deux phrases
Relative pronouns avoid repetition by linking two sentences: Je lis un livre. Le livre est intéressant. → Le livre que je lis est intéressant. The choice depends on the function of the word replaced.
Which relative to choose?
| qui | subject of the verb | L’homme qui parle est mon prof. (qui = he) |
| que (qu’) | object (COD) | Le livre que je lis. (que = the book) |
| où | place | La ville où j’habite. |
| où | time | Le jour où je suis arrivé. |
💡💡 qui or que?
If the word replaced is the subject of the following verb → qui (directly followed by a verb). If it is the object → que (followed by a subject + verb). Before a vowel, que → qu’ (but qui never changes).
C’est l’ami qui habite à Lyon. (qui = subject)
C’est l’ami que je vois souvent. (que = object)
le film qu’il préfère
