Les marqueurs de temps du passé
il y a, depuis, pendant, quand
⚡Key points
il y a + duration→«… ago» (il y a deux ans) — passé composé
depuis + duration/date→«since / for» (depuis 2020) — present tense!
pendant + duration→«during / for» (pendant deux heures)
quand→«when» (quand j’étais petit)
Situer une action dans le temps
These little words say when an action happens and how long it lasts. Note: depuis is used with the present tense in French.
The right marker
| il y a | … ago | Je suis arrivé il y a deux ans. (passé composé) |
| depuis | since / for | J’habite ici depuis 2020. (present!) |
| pendant | during / for | J’ai dormi pendant huit heures. |
| quand | when | Quand j’étais petit, j’habitais à Lyon. |
💡⚠️ depuis + present
For an action that started in the past and continues, French uses depuis + present (where English uses the present perfect): J’apprends le français depuis deux ans (= I have been learning French for two years, and I still am).
Il travaille ici depuis 2019.
