Nominalisation
From verb to noun: construire → la construction.
⚡Key points
What nominalisation is
Nominalisation turns a verb or adjective into a noun. It makes a text more compact and formal, and is typical of press headlines and cohesive written style: Le prix a augmenté → L’augmentation du prix.
Verb → noun
| construire | la construction | -tion |
| changer | le changement | -ment |
| laver | le lavage | -age |
| arriver | l’arrivée | -ée |
| partir | le départ | (no suffix) |
| choisir | le choix | (special form) |
Adjective → noun
Adjectives are nominalised too, often with the suffixes -té, -ité, -ance/-ence, -eur: beau → la beauté, possible → la possibilité, patient → la patience, lent → la lenteur.
Examples in context
Press headline
Suppression de 200 emplois. (= On a supprimé 200 emplois.)
Text cohesion
Il est arrivé tard. Ce retard a tout changé. (the idea echoed by a noun.)
Adjective → noun
La rapidité du service est appréciée. (= Le service est rapide.)
💡⚠️ Gender of nominalisations
Dialogue: news headlines
Editor: For the headline: “Rise in energy prices”. | Intern: Rather than “Energy prices are rising”? | Editor: Yes, nominalisation is punchier. | Intern: And next: “Closure of the factory and layoff of the staff”.
