The imperative
L’impératif
Giving an order, advice or instruction
⚡Key points
3 forms: tu, nous, vous→no subject pronoun
-er: no -s for « tu »→Parle ! Mange ! Va !
être/avoir/aller irregular→Sois ! Aie ! Va !
negation: Ne parle pas !→negative form
Former l’impératif
The imperative has three forms (tu, nous, vous) and you drop the subject pronoun. For -er verbs, the « tu » form loses its -s: tu parles → Parle !
parler / finir in the imperative
| tu | Parle ! / Finis ! | Speak! / Finish! (-er: no -s) |
| nous | Parlons ! / Finissons ! | Let’s speak! / let’s finish! |
| vous | Parlez ! / Finissez ! | Speak! / Finish! |
Three irregular verbs
1
être
Sois sage !
Soyons calmes.
Soyez à l’heure !
2
avoir
Aie confiance !
Ayons du courage.
Ayez de la patience !
3
aller
Va à l’école !
Allons-y !
Allez tout droit.
💡⚠️ Negation and pronominal verbs
In the negative, you frame the verb: Ne parle pas !, Ne mange pas ça ! For an affirmative pronominal verb, the pronoun goes after with a hyphen and toi: Lève-toi !; in the negative it returns before: Ne te lève pas !
Ne parle pas !
Lève-toi !
Ne te lève pas !
