Inversion after adverbs
In formal style, certain adverbs at the front of a sentence trigger inversion of subject and verb: ainsi, aussi (= therefore), peut-être, sans doute, à peine, encore, du moins, en vain, tout au plus.

Incise and subordinate clauses
The incise (inserted reporting words) always requires inversion: « Viens », dit-il, répondit-elle, murmura-t-il. In relative and time clauses, inversion is possible for rhythm: le livre que lisait Marie, le jour où mourut le roi.

💡⚠️ Inversion is a style device, not mandatory
Stylistic inversion lends a sentence formality and rhythm; in ordinary speech it is avoided. It differs from the mandatory inversion in a question (Viens-tu ?). In an incise with il/elle and a verb ending in a vowel, add -t-: pensa-t-il.
Formal: Sans doute viendra-t-il.
Everyday: Il viendra sans doute.
