The backshift of tenses

When the reporting verb is in the past (a dit, disait, a demandé), the tenses in the clause shift back. This is called the concordance des temps (sequence of tenses).

Backshift table

présent
→ imparfait
« je suis » → qu’il était
passé composé
→ plus-que-parfait
« j’ai vu » → qu’il avait vu

Time and place markers

Along with the tenses, the time expressions shift too: aujourd’hui → ce jour-là, hier → la veille, demain → le lendemain, maintenant → à ce moment-là, ici → là.

Examples

1

présent → imparfait

« Je suis malade. » → Il a dit qu’il était malade.

2

futur → conditional

« Je partirai demain. » → Il a dit qu’il partirait le lendemain.

3

passé composé → plus-que-parfait

« J’ai tout fini. » → Elle a dit qu’elle avait tout fini.

💡⚠️ Imparfait and conditional do not change

The tenses imparfait, plus-que-parfait and conditional are already “shifted” and do not change when moving to the past. If the reporting verb is in the present, there is no backshift (previous lesson).
« Il pleuvait. » → Elle a dit qu’il pleuvait. (imparfait = imparfait)
« Je viendrais bien. » → Il a dit qu’il viendrait bien. (cond. = cond.)
