Indefinite pronouns refer to a person or thing without precise definition. The positive ones (quelqu’un, quelque chose) and their negative pairs (personne, rien) form the negative with ne.

Positive and negative

Person

Quelqu’un a frappé à la porte. (Someone knocked.)

Il n’y a personne. (There is no one here.)

Thing

J’ai vu quelque chose d’étrange. (I saw something strange.)

Je ne vois rien. (I see nothing.)

n’importe…

N’importe qui peut entrer. (Anyone can come in.)

Prends n’importe quoi. (Take anything.)

Quantity: chacun, certains, plusieurs, tout

These pronouns express quantity or a whole: chacun (each one individually), certains (some), plusieurs (several), quelques-uns (a few of them), aucun (none, with ne), tout / tous / toutes (everything / all).

💡⚠️ personne, rien, aucun + ne

The negative pronouns personne, rien, aucun require ne before the verb (no pas): Personne ne sait. Rien n’est sûr. Aucun ne marche. Note: the pronoun tous is pronounced with the s sound (tous [tus]).

Personne ne m’a appelé.

Je ne regrette rien.
