Formation: imparfait of the auxiliary + past participle
The pluperfect is formed like the passé composé, but the auxiliary is in the imparfait: avais / étais + past participle. It marks an action that happened before another past action.
Manger (auxiliary avoir)

Verbs with the auxiliary être
Verbs of movement and reflexive verbs use être, and the past participle agrees with the subject in gender and number.
Partir (auxiliary être)

When to use it

Anteriority in the past
Quand je suis arrivé, il était déjà parti. (When I arrived, he had already left.)

Elle était fatiguée parce qu’elle avait mal dormi. (She was tired because she had slept badly.)

Regret with si
Si j’avais su, je serais venu. (If I had known, I would have come.)
💡⚠️ Past participle agreement
As in the passé composé: with être the participle agrees with the subject (elle était partie); with avoir only with a preceding direct object (les livres que j’avais lus).
Elles étaient déjà arrivées. (être → -es)
La lettre qu’il avait écrite. (avoir + preceding object → -e)
