Former l’imparfait

To form the imparfait, take the « nous » stem from the present (nous parlons → parl-) and add the endings -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient. It is regular for almost every verb.

💡⚠️ Only one irregular stem: être

The verb être has a special imparfait stem: ét-. The endings are regular: j’étais, tu étais, il était, nous étions, vous étiez, ils étaient.

When to use the imparfait
