Possessive and demonstrative determiners
Les déterminants possessifs et démonstratifs
Saying whose it is (mon, ma, mes) and pointing (ce, cette, ces)
⚡Key points
mon / ma / mes→my — agrees with the object, not the owner
mon amie (not « ma amie »)→before a vowel: mon/ton/son
ce / cet / cette / ces→this / these (pointing)
cet homme→cet before a vowel/h in the masculine
Les adjectifs possessifs
The possessive adjective shows who something belongs to. In French it agrees with the thing possessed (its gender and number), not with the owner — unlike English, where « his/her » depends on the owner.
Possessives (masc. / fem. / plural)
| I (je) | mon / ma / mes | mon livre, ma table, mes amis |
| you (tu) | ton / ta / tes | ton stylo, ta voiture, tes clés |
| he/she (il/elle) | son / sa / ses | son chat, sa maison, ses livres |
| we (nous) | notre / nos | notre maison, nos amis |
| you (vous) | votre / vos | votre stylo, vos clés |
| they (ils/elles) | leur / leurs | leur voiture, leurs enfants |
💡⚠️ It agrees with the object; mon/ton/son before a vowel
Choose mon, ma, mes based on the noun: sa voiture = his or her car (French does not distinguish!). Before a feminine noun starting with a vowel, use mon / ton / son (for pronunciation): mon amie, ton école.
son livre = his / her book (context decides)
mon amie (feminine + vowel → mon)
notre / votre / leur: one form in the singular
Dialogue: whose is it?
LéaC’est ton sac ?
MaxNon, c’est son sac à elle. Mon sac est noir.
LéaEt ces clés ? Ce sont vos clés ?
MaxOui, ce sont nos clés et leur adresse est dedans.
Léa: Is it your bag? | Max: No, it’s her bag. My bag is black. | Léa: And these keys? Are they your keys? | Max: Yes, they are our keys and their address is inside.
Les adjectifs démonstratifs
The demonstrative adjective is used to point at or designate something (this / these). It agrees with the noun.
ce / cet / cette / ces
| Masculine | ce | ce livre, ce garçon |
| Masc. before vowel / h | cet | cet homme, cet ami, cet hôtel |
| Feminine | cette | cette table, cette femme |
| Plural | ces | ces livres, ces tables |
