Like ne… pas, these negations frame the verb. They refine the meaning: stopping (ne… plus), zero frequency (ne… jamais), no object/person (ne… rien / ne… personne).

💡⚠️ rien and personne can be subjects
Rien and personne can start the sentence as subjects; you keep ne before the verb: Personne ne vient., Rien ne marche. After a negation, the articles un/du/des become de: Je ne mange plus de viande.
