The accusative: direct object and direction
The case of the direct object (что/кого) and of direction (куда́), with the animacy rule
⚡Key points
What the accusative is for
The accusative (вини́тельный паде́ж) marks the direct object — the thing or person the action affects (what do you see? whom do you love?) — and the direction of movement (куда́? to which destination?). The verbs видеть, люби́ть, чита́ть, знать, покупать take the accusative.
Accusative endings
| Masculine inanimate | = nominative | стол → ви́жу стол, журнал → журнал |
| Masculine animate | = genitive (-а / -я) | студе́нт → студе́нта, Ива́н → Ивана |
| Neuter | = nominative | окно́ → окно́, мо́ре → мо́ре |
| Feminine -а | → -у | кни́га → кни́гу, Москва́ → Москву́ |
| Feminine -я | → -ю | неде́ля → неде́лю, Таня → Таню |
| Feminine -ь | = nominative | тетра́дь → тетра́дь, мать → мать |
💡⚠️ The animacy rule (masculine)
Куда́? в / на + accusative
To express the direction of movement (куда́ — to where?), use в or на + accusative. Be careful not to confuse it with location (где — where?), which takes the prepositional.
Где (location) vs Куда́ (direction)
Где? в / на + prepositional (no motion)
Я в шко́ле. (I am at school — where?)
Кни́га на столе́. (the book is on the table)
Куда́? в / на + accusative (motion)
Я иду́ в шко́лу. (I am going to school — to where?)
Я еду на рабо́ту. (I am going to work)
Мы идём в Москву́. (feminine -а → -у)
