Second-Group Verbs (-ить)

Second-group verbs end in -ить and take the endings -ю / -ишь / -ит / -им / -ите / -ят. The model verb is говори́ть (to speak).

Verbs in -ить without alternation
строить → я строю, ты стро́ишь, они́ стро́ят (to build)
учить → я учу́, ты у́чишь, они́ у́чат (to study / to teach)
звонить → я звоню́, ты звони́шь, они́ звоня́т (to call / phone)
Common verbs with prepositional case
говори́ть по-русски (to speak in Russian)
звонить ма́ме (to call mom — dative)
учить но́вые слова (to learn new words — accusative)

-л- alternation in the 1st person singular
For 2nd-group verbs whose stem ends in б, в, м, п, ф, a -л- is inserted in the 1st person singular only (я). The alternation disappears in the other persons.

Other verbs with the -л- alternation
Verbs with stem ending in -б, -п, -в, -м, -ф
купить → я куплю́, ты ку́пишь (to buy)
спать → я сплю, ты спишь (to sleep — irregular stem)
готовить → я гото́влю, ты гото́вишь (to cook / prepare)
кормить → я кормлю́, ты ко́рмишь (to feed)
-еть / -ать verbs conjugated as 2nd group
Some verbs end in -еть or -ать but follow the 2nd-group conjugation. These have to be memorized case by case — but they are extremely common verbs.
