From direct to reported speech

Direct speech reports the exact words in quotation marks: Он сказа́л: «Я приду́». Reported speech embeds them in a subordinate clause after a comma, with что: Он сказа́л, что придёт. The pronouns shift to the reporter’s point of view.

💡⚠️ No tense backshift in Russian

Unlike English, Russian does not shift the tense of the reported verb: it keeps its original tense. « Я приду́ » (future) → Он сказа́л, что придёт (future kept). You only change the pronouns and the person.
« Я рабо́таю » → Он сказа́л, что рабо́тает (present kept)
« Я приду́ » → Он сказа́л, что придёт (future kept)

Introduce the clause with что

« Я уста́л. » → Он сказа́л, что уста́л. (He said he was tired.)

« Она́ лю́бит му́зыку. » → Он сказа́л, что она́ лю́бит му́зыку. (He said she liked music.)

Reporting a question

If the question has a question word (где, когда́, почему́, кто…), you keep it. If it is a yes/no question, you use the particle ли, placed after the word the question is about.

💡⚠️ The particle ли

ли reports a yes/no question (“whether”). The most important word goes first in the clause, followed by ли: Он спроси́л, приду́ ли я; Я не зна́ю, дома ли он (whether he is at home).
« Ты зна́ешь его́? » → Он спроси́л, зна́ю ли я его́.
« Э́то пра́вда? » → Скажи, пра́вда ли э́то.

Reporting a command: что́бы + past

Command → что́бы + past (or infinitive)

« Закрой дверь! » → Он попроси́л, что́бы я закры́л дверь. (He asked me to close the door.)
