Five registers
Each situation calls for a style (register): you do not speak to a friend the way you write an official request. Recognising styles and choosing suitable words is a key B2 skill.

Colloquial vs bookish: the markers
Recognising the register

Colloquial markers (разговорный)
Particles: ну, вот, же, -то; words: кла́ссно, па́рень, ку́ча.
Short, incomplete sentences: — Идёшь? — Ага.

Bookish markers (кни́жный)
Nominal turns and passive: осуществля́ется, явля́ется; в связи с, сле́дует.

Match the word to the context
Official: Прошу́ предоставить о́тпуск. (I request to be granted leave.)
Colloquial: Дай отдохнуть, а? (Let me have a break, will you?)
💡⚠️ Do not mix styles
Mixing registers in one sentence is a stylistic error: you do not write кла́ссно in an official letter, nor осуществлять among friends. The нау́чный and делово́й styles favour the nominal and the passive; the разговорный, short sentences and particles.
