Prepositions of Place (В / НА)

Prepositions of Place: В and НА

Choosing between "in" and "on" — the essential distinction

Key points

В + prepositional"In" an enclosed space (в Москве́, в ко́мнате)
НА + prepositional"On" a surface or at an event (на столе́, на рабо́те)
В + accusative"To" a place (Я иду́ в Москву́)
НА + accusative"To" an event / surface (на рабо́ту)
Exceptions to learn

In the prepositional case (answer to где ?), Russian chooses between В (in, inside) and НА (on, on the surface, or for events). The choice is not always intuitive, and some exceptions must be memorized.

В vs НА — general rule (where?)

Enclosed space / city / country
В + prepositional
Surface
Event or activity
Direction (enclosed space)
В + accusative
в ко́мнату, в Москву́ (where to?)
Direction (event)

Typical cases of В

1

Enclosed spaces and geography

в до́ме (in the house)

в шко́ле (at school)

в библиоте́ке (at the library)

в Москве́ (in Moscow)

в Росси́и (in Russia)

Typical cases of НА

1

Physical surfaces

на столе́ (on the table)

Dialogue: where are you?

Anya: Where are you? — Pasha: I am at work. And you? — Anya: I am at the library. A book is on the table in front of me. — Pasha: And tonight will you be at the café? — Anya: No, I will be at a concert.

Direction: В / НА + accusative

To express a direction ("I am going to…"), use the same prepositions but with the accusative case. The В/НА rule stays the same — only the case changes.

Motion: where to

1

В + accusative (enclosed space / city / country)

(I am going to school.)

(I am going to Moscow.)

(We are going to Russia.)

2

(I am going to work.)

(I am going to the concert.)

(I put the book on the table.)

💡📌 Three questions, three cases

Russian has a triple system for location: ГДЕ ? (where — fixed) → prepositional; Куда́ ? (where — direction) → accusative; ОТКУДА ? (from where) → genitive. And В/НА adapts to each case.

Exceptions to memorize
