Small words that change the tone

Modal particles add a nuance of attitude (emphasis, obviousness, surprise) to the sentence. Very common in speech, they rarely translate word for word: they colour the tone.

же, ведь: emphasis and obviousness

же and ведь

Using же and ведь

же: strengthens a question or a reminder

Что же де́лать? (So what is to be done?)

Ты же зна́ешь его́. (You do know him, after all.)

ведь: “you know, after all”

Он ведь ещё ребёнок. (He is only a child, after all.)

разве, неужели: surprise and doubt

разве and неужели

Using разве and неужели

разве: question, mild astonishment

Разве ты не знал? (Did you not know?)

неужели: stronger disbelief

Неужели мы опозда́ли? (Don’t tell me we are late?!)

💡⚠️ Nuances, not translations

These particles express the speaker’s attitude (emphasis, obviousness, surprise) more than a literal meaning. They do not translate word for word: learn them through examples and the tone they give.

-то and -нибудь: the specific and the vague

💡⚠️ -то (real but unknown) vs -нибудь (any one)

-то refers to a real but unidentified thing or person (often in the past): Кто-то пришёл (someone came — it happened). -нибудь refers to any one at all, hypothetical (often in the future, imperative or a question): Дай мне что-нибудь (give me something, anything).

Возьми кого-нибудь с собой. (anyone, -нибудь)
