Forming the imperative from the present, and the ты / вы forms

How to form the imperative
Start from the они́ form of the present, drop the ending and look at the stem. If it ends in a vowel, add -й; if it ends in a consonant, add -и. The polite / plural form adds -те.

Informal or polite
The short form addresses someone you’re on familiar terms with (ты). Add -те for the polite/plural form (вы) — used for several people or as the polite form.

💡⚠️ A few irregular imperatives
Memorise these — they’re very common: дать → дай(те) (give), есть → ешь(те) (eat), пить → пей(те) (drink), идти → иди(те) (go). With пожа́луйста, the order becomes a polite request.
Да́йте, пожа́луйста, меню́. (give me the menu, please)
Иди сюда ! (come here!)
Пе́йте чай, пока горя́чий. (drink the tea while it’s hot)
