Tropes (metaphor, metonymy, oxymoron)
Tropes (figures of speech)
Metaphor, metonymy, hyperbole, oxymoron: figurative meaning organised.
⚡Key points
Метонимия→transfer by real link: чита́ю Пушкина (= his works)
Figurative meaning organised
Tropes (тропы) are transfers of meaning: a word takes on a figurative sense. They are the basis of literary expressiveness. At C2, you name and recognise them, like a cultured reader.
Metaphor and metonymy
The two fundamental transfers
| Метафора (resemblance) | золоты́е руки | golden hands = very skilful |
| Метафора | мо́ре цвето́в | a sea of flowers = a great many |
| Метонимия (contiguity) | Весь зал аплодировал | the whole hall = the audience |
I read Pushkin = his works |
Usage
1
Metaphor: transfer by resemblance
(Time is money.)
(He has a heart of gold.)
2
Metonymy: transfer by real link
(I ate two plates = their contents.)
💡⚠️ Metaphor (resemblance) vs metonymy (contiguity)
The metaphor (метафора) transfers meaning by resemblance (золоты́е руки — precious like gold). The metonymy (метонимия) by real link / contiguity: contents for container (съесть таре́лку), author for work (чита́ть Пушкина), place for people (зал аплодировал).
metaphor: гори́т зака́т
metonymy: класс молча́л (= the pupils)
Hyperbole, oxymoron, personification
Other tropes
| Гипербола (exaggeration) | Ты́сячу раз говори́л | I said it a thousand times |
Usage
1
Hyperbole: exaggeration
(It has been a hundred years!)
(A sea of tears.)
2
Oxymoron: union of opposites
(Hot snow.)
(Eloquent silence.)
💡⚠️ Recognise the figure
The hyperbole (гипербола) exaggerates; the oxymoron (оксюморон) unites opposites (живо́й труп); the personification (олицетворение) gives human actions to the inanimate (ве́тер во́ет); the epithet (эпитет) is an expressive qualifier (золота́я о́сень).
Dialogue: a poem
