что (fact) vs что́бы (purpose)

что reports a fact (real mood): “I know that…”. что́бы expresses a purpose or a wish: “so that / in order to”. This is the key distinction of this lesson.

что (real) vs что́бы (purpose/wish)

что → stating a fact

Я зна́ю, что он дома. (fact)

Она́ сказа́ла, что уста́ла.

что́бы → purpose or wish

Я учу́ ру́сский, что́бы говори́ть с друзья́ми. (purpose)

Я хочу́, что́бы все были сча́стливы. (wish)

💡⚠️ что́бы: infinitive (same subject) or past (different subject)

If the subject is the same, что́бы is followed by the infinitive. If the subject changes, что́бы is followed by the past (even for the future!).
Я пришёл, что́бы помочь. (same subject → infinitive)
Я хочу́, что́бы ты помо́г. (different subject → past помо́г)
Скажи ему́, что́бы он позвони́л.

е́сли (condition) and когда́ (time)

е́сли introduces a condition (if). когда́ introduces a time reference (when). With a future meaning, the verb is in the future in both clauses.
