Declining the adjective (2): the oblique cases

Genitive, dative, instrumental, prepositional — and the big feminine shortcut

Masculine and neuter in the oblique cases

In the masculine and neuter (which share the same forms outside the nominative), the adjective has a different ending for each case. Good news: these endings are regular.

но́вый (masc./neuter) declined

Genitive	но́вого	у но́вого дома (near the new house)
Dative	но́вому	к но́вому дому (towards the new house)
Instrumental	но́вым	с но́вым дру́гом (with the new friend)
Prepositional	но́вом	о но́вом до́ме (about the new house)

💡⚠️ The feminine: one form for all oblique cases

This is the big shortcut: in the feminine, the adjective takes -ой for the genitive, dative, instrumental AND prepositional. Just one form to remember: но́вой.

Genitive: у но́вой маши́ны · Dative: к но́вой маши́не

Instrumental: с но́вой маши́ной · Prepositional: о но́вой маши́не

Only the feminine accusative differs: но́вую (seen in the previous lesson).

The adjective follows the noun’s case

The golden rule: the adjective goes in the same case as the noun it accompanies. The noun and the adjective “travel together”.

Adjective + noun in the same case

Masculine / neuter

Я живу́ в большо́м го́роде. (prepositional)

Я говорю́ с но́вым студе́нтом. (instrumental)

Feminine (always -ой in the oblique)

Я ду́маю о ру́сской му́зыке. (prepositional)

Э́то кни́га хоро́шей подру́ги. (genitive)

Оле́гЯ живу́ в но́вом райо́не, ря́дом с больши́м па́рком.
