What the dative is for

The recipient (ко́му?)

Verbs that involve giving or communicating something to someone put that “someone” in the dative: дать (to give), сказать (to say), писа́ть (to write), звонить (to call), помогать (to help).

Verbs taking the dative

1

Give / say / write to someone

Я даю́ кни́гу бра́ту. (I give the book to my brother)

Она́ пи́шет письмо́ ма́ме. (she writes a letter to her mother)

2

Call / help someone

Я звоню́ дру́гу каждый день. (I call my friend every day)

Студе́нт помога́ет учи́телю. (the student helps the teacher)

нравиться: what I like

To say you like something, Russian “flips” the sentence: the person who likes is in the dative, and the thing liked is the grammatical subject. The verb therefore agrees with the thing liked.

💡⚠️ нра́вится (singular) or нра́вятся (plural)?

The verb agrees with what is liked: нра́вится if it is singular, нра́вятся if it is plural. The person stays in the dative (мне, тебе́…).
Мне нра́вится му́зыка. (I like music — singular)
Мне нра́вятся кни́ги. (I like books — plural)
Ему́ нра́вится Москва́. (he likes Moscow)
