Comparing with clauses

A2 covered the forms of the comparative (бо́льше, лучше…) and superlative. B2 adds the constructions that compare two clauses or two elements: proportion, addition, resemblance, progression.

чем… тем: “the more… the more”

Чем дальше, тем труднее. (The further it goes, the harder it gets.)

💡⚠️ чем… тем: a comparative in each clause

The construction чем… тем (“the more… the more”, “the less… the less”) has a comparative in each clause: Чем бо́льше я рабо́таю, тем бо́льше устаю́. The чем-clause comes first, set off by a comma.
Чем теплее, тем лучше. (The warmer, the better.)
Чем меньше говори́шь, тем бо́льше слу́шают.

Usage

Здесь продаю́т как кни́ги, так и журналы. (They sell both books and magazines here.)

Дни стано́вятся всё короче. (The days are getting shorter and shorter.)
