The past tense: mandatory agreement
In the past tense, БЫТЬ agrees in gender and number with the subject. The same grammatical person ("I") can give был or была depending on the speaker’s sex — a rule that surprises every English learner.

Common past-tense constructions
Location (where someone was)
Я был в Москве́. (I was in Moscow — male)
Она́ была дома. (She was at home)
Мы были в кино́. (We were at the cinema)
State or condition (how things were)
Э́то было тру́дно. (It was hard — neuter)
Она́ была уставшая. (She was tired)
Они́ были сча́стливы. (They were happy)
Past possession: "У меня́ был…"
У меня́ был друг. (I had a friend — agrees with друг, masculine)
У неё была соба́ка. (She had a dog — agrees with соба́ка, feminine)
У нас было вре́мя. (We had time — agrees with вре́мя, neuter)
Dialogue: talking about the weekend
Oleg: Where were you on Saturday? — Masha: I was at my grandmother’s. And you? — Oleg: We were at the dacha. It was very warm. — Masha: And your parents were there too? — Oleg: Yes, and we had a banya in the evening.
The future: regular conjugation
In the future, БЫТЬ conjugates normally. No gender agreement this time — only person and number. It is also the auxiliary verb used to form the imperfective future of other verbs.

Impersonal constructions: мне было / мне будет
To express a felt state ("I was cold", "he will be scared"), Russian uses an impersonal construction with the pronoun in the dative and БЫТЬ in the neuter. No visible grammatical subject.

Physical or emotional state in the past
Мне было хо́лодно. (I was cold)
Ей было гру́стно. (She was sad)
Нам было ве́село. (We were having fun)
Upcoming state in the future
Мне будет жа́рко в Москве́ ле́том. (I’ll be hot in Moscow in summer)
Тебе́ будет стра́шно. (You will be scared)
Им будет интере́сно. (They will find it interesting)
Dialogue: expressing a feeling
Guide: Tomorrow it will be very cold. Take a scarf. — Tourist: Thanks! Yesterday I was very warm. — Guide: Yes, the weather changes sharply. Be careful.
