“Whatever happens”: generalizing concession

Beyond хотя and несмотря на (B1), Russian expresses a generalizing concession (“no matter…”) with a question word + often бы + the particle ни. It covers all possible cases.

Assert something despite all circumstances

Что бы ни говори́ли, я оста́нусь. (Whatever they say, I will stay.)

Куда́ бы ты ни пое́хал, пиши мне. (Wherever you go, write to me.)

💡⚠️ Question word + (бы) + ни

Generalizing concession is formed with a question word (как, что, кто, где, ско́лько…) + often бы + the particle ни. This ни is not a negation: it reinforces the “no matter” meaning. With бы, the verb is in the past: что бы ни случилось.

как… ни (without бы): factual concession

Without бы, как… ни expresses a factual concession: a real effort that does not succeed. The verb is in the indicative (present or past).
