You already know how to form the past (-л/-ла/-ло/-ли). Here you choose which verb to use: the imperfective to describe the unfolding, the perfective to announce a result.

When to choose the imperfective (НСВ)

Process, duration

Вчера́ я до́лго чита́л кни́гу. (without saying I finished it)

Весь день я писа́л статью.

Repetition, habit

Каждый день я покупа́л хлеб.

Раньше мы ча́сто гуля́ли в па́рке.

When to choose the perfective (СВ)

Result, completed action

Я прочита́л кни́гу за два дня. (finished!)

Наконе́ц я написа́л письмо́.

Sequence of finished actions

Я пришёл домо́й, поужинал и лёг спать.

Она́ откры́ла дверь и вошла́.

Some adverbs almost always call for one aspect: ча́сто, обы́чно, до́лго, всегда́, каждый день → imperfective (НСВ); вдруг, наконе́ц, уже, сра́зу → perfective (СВ).
