What is verb government?
The government (управление) of a verb is the case (or preposition + case) it requires for its complement. In Russian this case is not always the accusative and does not always match the English construction. So you must learn each verb together with its case.
Verbs + genitive
Genitive government
| бояться (to be afraid of) | + genitive | Я бою́сь темноты. (I am afraid of the dark.) |

💡⚠️ Cases different from English
Several Russian verbs take an unexpected case for an English speaker. помогать and звонить require the dative (помогать другу, звонить маме), whereas English “help” and “call” take a direct object.
помогать дру́гу (dative, not accusative)
звонить ма́ме (dative)
