Recognising and conjugating verbs in -ся / -сь (учиться, заниматься…)
⚡Key points
What is a verb in -ся?
Many Russian verbs end in a particle -ся (or -сь) attached to the verb. This particle always stays at the end, even when conjugated. It often matches the English “-self” / “each other”, but not always.
учиться (to study) in the present
| я | учу́сь | Я учу́сь в университе́те. (I study at university) |
| ты | у́чишься | Где ты у́чишься ? |
| он / она́ | у́чится | Она́ у́чится хорошо́. |
| мы | у́чимся | Мы у́чимся вме́сте. |
| вы | учитесь | Вы учитесь или рабо́таете ? |
| они́ | у́чатся | Они́ у́чатся в шко́ле. |
💡⚠️ -сь after a vowel, -ся after a consonant
Three common meanings
The particle -ся can carry several meanings. You don’t need to analyse them all: the key point is that the verb conjugates normally, with -ся/-сь at the end.
