Word order and emphasis (тема / рема)

Word order and emphasis

Те́ма and рема: in Russian, word order carries meaning — what is new goes last.

Key points

те́ма (known) → рема (new)new information goes at the end (neutral order)
Ма́ма купи́ла хлебрема = хлеб (what she bought)
Хлеб купи́ла ма́марема = ма́ма (who bought it)
Прекра́сный был день!inversion = expressiveness (emotion)
Order, not articlesRussian marks focus through word order

Те́ма and рема: structured information

Russian word order is free, but it is not neutral: it carries the information structure. The те́ма (what is already known) comes first, the рема (the new, most important information) comes last.

Same words, different order

Neutral (рема last)
Ма́ма купи́ла хлеб.
Mum bought BREAD (new: хлеб)
Focus on the agent
Хлеб купи́ла ма́ма.
It was MUM who bought the bread (рема: ма́ма)
Focus on the action
Хлеб ма́ма купи́ла.
The bread, mum BOUGHT it (рема: купи́ла)

The question determines the рема

1

The new info (рема) answers the question

— Что купи́ла ма́ма? — Ма́ма купи́ла хлеб. (рема: хлеб)

— Кто купи́л хлеб? — Хлеб купи́ла ма́ма. (рема: ма́ма)

💡⚠️ New information goes at the end

In neutral Russian, what is new / most important (the рема) goes at the end; what is known (the те́ма) goes first. It is word order, more than intonation, that marks the focus.
Кни́га на столе́. (where is the book → рема: на столе́)
На столе́ кни́га. (what is on the table → рема: кни́га)

Expressive inversion

In expressive language (emotional speech, literary style), you invert: the emotionally charged word moves to the front, before the verb or the subject. The neutral order would be flat.

Expressive fronting

1

Highlight by fronting

Прекра́сный был ве́чер! (What a lovely evening it was!)

Уста́л я стра́шно. (I am terribly tired.)

2

Adjective / adverb first

Мо́лодец ты! (Well done you!)

Бы́стро же ты бе́гаешь! (How fast you run!)

💡⚠️ Inversion = expressiveness

Fronting (Прекра́сный был день!) is expressive: it conveys emotion. The neutral order would be День был прекра́сный. Reserve it for emotional speech and literary style.
Хоро́шая э́то иде́я! (vs neutral: Э́то хоро́шая иде́я.)
Не люблю́ я спе́шки. (vs Я не люблю́ спе́шку.)

Dialogue: shades of emphasis

ТомВа́зу разби́л кот, не я!
ИраА цветы кто полил?
ТомЦветы я полил. Мо́лодец я, пра́вда?

Ira: Who broke the vase? — Tom: It was the cat who broke the vase, not me! — Ira: And who watered the flowers? — Tom: The flowers, I watered them. I am a champion, right?
