Subverting a fixed idiom

Transformation (трансформация фразеологизма) deliberately modifies a normally fixed set phrase. It is a major device of headlines and advertising: the gap with the expected form creates humour or surprise.

The transformation devices

Four devices

1

(the continuation « а имей сто друзе́й » is implied.)

4

Literalisation (буквализация)

reviving the literal sense of a frozen metaphor.

Subversions in action

Original form → subversion

substitution (advertising)
ironic substitution
expansion
humorous substitution

💡⚠️ The effect requires knowing the original

Transformation deliberately modifies a fixed set phrase — by substitution, expansion, truncation or literalisation. The effect (humour, surprise, irony) works only if the reader recognises the original form.
«Москва́ слеза́м не ве́рит» → a headline subverted to fit the news
the play rests on the expected proverb

Dialogue: a subverted headline

Editor: Is the headline “Рекламе все во́зрасты поко́рны” a mistake? — Journalist: No, it is a transformation of the set phrase “Любви́ все во́зрасты поко́рны” (All ages yield to love). — Editor: I see: the effect works if the reader recognises the original. — Journalist: Exactly. Otherwise the joke falls flat.
