From real movement to figurative meaning

The prefixed verbs of motion (seen at A2 for movement) also have many figurative meanings, very common in everyday Russian. The context — often an inanimate subject — signals that no real movement is meant.

Uses of прийти and пройти

Мы пришли́ к вы́воду. (We reached a conclusion.)

💡⚠️ Same verb, very different meanings

The same verb of motion can have a concrete AND a figurative meaning depending on context. идти = to go on foot, but also “time passes”, “it rains”, “a film is on”, “it suits you”. An inanimate subject is often the clue to the figurative meaning.

These uses cannot be guessed: it is better to learn them as set phrases: прийти к вы́воду, прийти в го́лову, выйти замуж, перейти к де́лу, э́то тебе́ идёт.
