The genitive plural
The hardest form: -ов / -ев / -ей / zero ending
⚡Key points
When to use the genitive plural
The genitive plural is used after нет (there is no…), after the quantity words мно́го, мало́, ско́лько, не́сколько, and after numbers from 5 on. It is the most irregular form in Russian — hence a dedicated lesson.
Masculine: -ов / -ев / -ей
| Hard consonant | → -ов | студе́нт → студе́нтов, стол → столо́в, дом → домо́в |
| -й | → -ев | музе́й → музе́ев, геро́й → геро́ев |
| -ь | → -ей | слова́рь → словаре́й, рубль → рубле́й |
| ж, ш, ч, щ | → -ей | врач → враче́й, нож → ноже́й, каранда́ш → карандаше́й |
Feminine and neuter: zero ending or -ей
💡⚠️ The fleeting vowel (zero ending)
Irregulars to memorise
Fully irregular plurals
друг → друзе́й, брат → бра́тьев, сын → сынове́й.
человек → люде́й, ребёнок → дете́й.
мать → матере́й, дочь → дочере́й.
год → лет (after numbers)
пять лет, де́сять лет (but два года, три года).
Ско́лько тебе́ лет ? (how old are you?)
After numbers: 2-4 vs 5+
An essential reminder: after 2, 3, 4 (and 22, 23, 24…), the noun is in the genitive singular. After 5 and more, it switches to the genitive plural.
💡⚠️ два студе́нта but пять студе́нтов
Dialogue: at the market
Vera: How much are these apples? — Seller: Five apples, a hundred roubles. Would you like some tomatoes too? — Vera: No, thanks. I have little money today. — Seller: Then take six apples and two bananas.
