Building words from a root
A Russian word is often made of a root, one or more prefixes and suffixes. Recognising these parts lets you guess the meaning of new words and quickly expand your vocabulary.
Forming nouns
Noun suffixes

-ение / -ание: noun of action or result
образовать → образова́ние (education)
знать → зна́ние (knowledge)
-ость: abstract quality

-тель: the one who does the action
писа́ть → писа́тель (writer)
чита́ть → чита́тель (reader)
