Expressive particles

Beyond же/ведь: -таки, всё-таки, аж, лишь, да and emphatic -то.

Reinforcing and shading (beyond же / ведь)

B1 covered же, ведь, разве, неужели. C1 adds other expressive particles that finely colour the message: -таки, всё-таки, аж, лишь, plus exclamatory да and emphatic -то.

Usage

1

-таки: “after all, in the end”

Он-таки сдал экза́мен. (He did pass the exam after all.)

Опя́ть-таки ты прав. (Then again, you are right.)

аж: intensity (colloquial)

Я аж подпры́гнул от ра́дости. (I even jumped for joy.)

Жда́ли аж три ча́са. (We waited a whole three hours.)

💡⚠️ -таки is hyphenated; всё-таки = “after all”

-таки is written with a hyphen after a verb, an adverb, or всё / опя́ть: пришёл-таки, всё-таки, опя́ть-таки. It marks that a result is achieved despite obstacles. всё-таки = “nevertheless, after all”.
Он-таки уе́хал. (he did leave)
Всё-таки она́ хоро́шая. (she is good, after all)

лишь, да, emphatic -то

Usage

лишь: “only” (bookish)

Лишь ты мо́жешь помочь. (Only you can help.)

Лишь бы всё получи́лось! (If only everything works out!)

exclamatory да / emphatic -то

Да замолчи же! (Oh, do be quiet!)

Я-то всё понима́ю. (I, for one, understand everything.)

💡⚠️ лишь = только (bookish); emphatic -то ≠ indefinite -то

лишь is a bookish equivalent of только (“only”). The emphatic -то (Я-то зна́ю = I, for one, know) stresses a contrast; do not confuse it with the indefinite -то (кто-то = someone, seen at B1).
Лишь бы не дождь. (if only it does not rain)
Ты-то откуда зна́ешь? (how do YOU know?)

Dialogue: an exam

Ве́раНу что, сдал?
Гри́шаСдал-таки! Хотя гото́вился лишь два дня.
Ве́раДва дня?! Я аж удиви́лась.
Гри́шаДа я и сам не ве́рю. Всё-таки повезло́.

Vera: So, did you pass? — Grisha: I did pass after all! Although I only studied for two days. — Vera: Two days?! I was even surprised. — Grisha: I cannot believe it myself. I was lucky after all.
