Expressing approximation

To say “about”, Russian uses inversion (the noun goes before the number) or words like около, примерно, приблизительно.

Ways to approximate

inversion: noun + number	человек де́сять	about ten people
около + genitive	около десяти человек	about ten people
примерно / приблизительно	примерно сто рубле́й	about a hundred roubles
с + accusative	с неде́лю	about a week

Usage

Inversion noun + number = “about”

Подожди минут пять. (Wait about five minutes.)

Ему́ лет тридцать. (He is about thirty.)

около / примерно

Около ста человек пришло́. (About a hundred people came.)

💡⚠️ Inversion = approximation

When the noun precedes the number, it means “about”: пять минут (five minutes, exact) ↔ минут пять (about five minutes). The same applies to ages, prices and distances.

Usage

Common fractions

Прошло́ по̀лча́са. (Half an hour has passed.)

Оста́лась че́тверть пути́. (A quarter of the way is left.)

Decimals: “це́лых… десятых”

3.5 = три це́лых пять десятых (or “три с полови́ной”).

Numerals in the oblique cases

The numeral declines with the noun

In use, numeral + noun decline together

Я пришёл с двумя друзья́ми. (instrumental: with two friends)

К трём часа́м будь гото́в. (dative: by three o’clock)

Речь о пяти кни́гах. (prepositional: about five books)

💡⚠️ The numeral and the noun decline together

In the oblique cases, both the numeral AND the noun decline: с двумя друзьями (instrumental), к трём часам (dative). This puts to use the declension of numerals (seen at A2).
