Correlative constructions

A word in the main clause announces the subordinate one: тот кто, то что, тако́й что, сто́лько ско́лько.

What is a correlative construction?

In a correlative construction, a word in the main clause (тот, то, тако́й, сто́лько, там…) announces a subordinate clause introduced by кто, что, како́й, ско́лько, где… It differs from кото́рый, which directly modifies a noun: here the pair of words works together.

Usage

тот, кто: identify a person by a feature

Тот, кто мно́го чита́ет, мно́го зна́ет. (The one who reads a lot knows a lot.)

то, что: “what / that which”

То, что ты сказа́л, пра́вда. (What you said is true.)

Я не по́мню то, что было вчера́. (I do not remember what happened yesterday.)

💡⚠️ тот / то decline by the main clause; кто / что by the subordinate

In тот, кто and то, что, the correlative word (тот / то) takes the case required by the main clause, and кто / что the case required by the subordinate clause: Я говорю́ с тем, кого зна́ю (с тем = instrumental after “говори́ть с”; кого = accusative after “знать”).
Помоги тому, кто про́сит. (тому = dative; кто = nominative)
Я ду́маю о том, что ты сказа́л. (о том = prepositional)

тако́й / так… что: intensity leading to a result

Кни́га така́я интере́сная, что я не мог оторваться. (So interesting that I could not put it down.)

сто́лько, ско́лько: equal quantity

У меня́ сто́лько вре́мени, ско́лько ну́жно. (I have as much time as needed.)

там / туда́ / тогда́ + где / куда́ / когда́

Иди туда́, куда́ хо́чешь. (Go wherever you want.)

💡⚠️ тако́й… что (result) vs тако́й… како́й (comparison)

тако́й… что expresses a result from intensity: Он тако́й си́льный, что по́дня́л маши́ну. тако́й… како́й expresses a comparison / identity: Купи тако́й телефо́н, како́й у меня́ (the same as mine).
