Cause and result (так как, благодаря тому что…)

Cause and result

Shading cause and result:

Key points

так как, посколькуbecause, since (neutral cause, can begin the sentence)
из-за того что (+ genitive)because of — negative cause
благодаря тому что (+ dative)thanks to — positive cause
так чтоso that (result)
в результа́те, следовательноas a result, therefore (formal)

Beyond

B1 adds more nuanced and formal conjunctions, which distinguish positive and negative cause and enrich the expression of result.

Expressing cause

Cause conjunctions

так как (because, since)
neutral cause
(Since it was raining, we stayed home.)
поскольку (given that)
cause, formal
(Given that he is busy…)
negative cause
(Because he was late…)
positive cause
(Thanks to his help, we made it.)

Using cause conjunctions

1

так как / поскольку: neutral cause (often first)

(Since it was late, everyone left.)

2

(The match was cancelled because of the rain.)

3

(Thanks to leaving early, we were not late.)

Choose by nuance: благодаря (тому что) introduces a positive cause (thanks to), из-за (того что) a negative or neutral one (because of). With nouns: благодаря + dative, из-за + genitive.
благодаря по́мощи (thanks to the help — positive, dative)
из-за дождя́ (because of the rain — negative, genitive)

Expressing result

Result conjunctions

поэ́тому (that is why)
result
(It was late, that is why we left.)
так что (so, so that)

следовательно (therefore)

Using result conjunctions

1

(The shop is closed, so we will buy tomorrow.)

2

(Prices rose; as a result demand fell.)

💡⚠️ так как can begin the sentence

Unlike потому́ что (never first), так как, поскольку and из-за того что can begin the sentence, with the main clause after the comma: Так как было поздно, мы ушли́.

Dialogue: a delayed project

Boss: Why is the project not ready? — Ania: Because the client sent the data late. — Boss: I see. So we need more time? — Ania: Yes. But thanks to the team working all week, the main part is ready.
