Purpose and concession
Purpose (что́бы, для того что́бы) and concession (хотя, несмотря на то что).
⚡Key points
Purpose is expressed with что́бы (already seen at A2) and, for emphasis, для того что́бы (“in order to”). The construction depends on the subject: infinitive if the subject is the same, past if the subject is different.
Purpose conjunctions
(I learn Russian to read Tolstoy.) |
(I explain so that you understand.) |
(In order to pass the exam…) |
Using purpose
Same subject → infinitive
(I came to help.)
Different subject → past
(I speak slowly so that everyone understands.)
💡⚠️ что́бы + infinitive or + past
Expressing concession:
Concession expresses an obstacle that does not prevent the main action (“although”, “despite”). It is new at B1:
Concession conjunctions
(Although it was cold, we walked.) |
(Despite being tired, he kept going.) |
(Despite the rain, the match took place.) |
Using concession
хотя: an obstacle that does not prevent
(Although he is young, he is very experienced.)
(Despite the difficulties, we won.)
(It was late, nevertheless we stayed.)
