Aspect: the subtle meanings of the imperfective
Stating a fact (Ты чита́л?) and the annulled result (приходи́л ≠ пришёл).
⚡Key points
Beyond “НСВ = process”
A2 and B1 laid the basics: imperfective = process / repetition, perfective = result / single action. B2 refines two frequent uses of the past imperfective: the general-factual meaning and the annulled result.
The “general-factual” meaning of the imperfective
In the past, the imperfective can simply state that an action took place, without caring about its completion. The focus is on the fact itself (or the agent), not on the result.
When to use it
State an experience
Ты чита́л «Войну́ и мир»? (Have you read War and Peace? — the fact)
Я уже обе́дал. (I have already had lunch. — the fact)
Focus on the agent or the action
Кто стро́ил э́тот дом? (Who built this house? — who, not the result)
💡⚠️ “чита́л” (the fact) vs “прочита́л” (the result)
The annulled result
The past imperfective can signal an annulled result: the action took place, then its effect disappeared. Often with “two-way” verbs (go-come, take-return, open-close).
Annulled result (НСВ) ↔ maintained (СВ)
| открывал ↔ откры́л | окно́ | opened then closed ↔ opened (still open) |
| приходи́л ↔ пришёл | друг | came and left ↔ came (still here) |
| брал ↔ взял | кни́гу | took and returned ↔ took (still has it) |
| включа́л ↔ включи́л | свет | turned on then off ↔ turned on (still on) |
Comparing the two
Annulled result → imperfective
Ко мне приходи́л друг. (A friend came — and left.)
Я открывал окно́. (I opened the window — it is closed again.)
Maintained result → perfective
Ко мне пришёл друг. (A friend came — he is still here.)
Я откры́л окно́. (I opened the window — it is open.)
💡⚠️ “приходи́л” (left) vs “пришёл” (still here)
Dialogue: visits
Mum: Did someone come to see you? — Son: Yes, Dima came, but he has already left. — Mum: And have you had lunch? — Son: I have. And I read the book you recommended, but I did not finish it.
