Aspect in the future and the imperative

Aspect in the future and the imperative

буду + НСВ vs conjugated perfective; one-off vs repeated orders

Key points

Future НСВбуду / будешь + infinitive: буду чита́ть
Future СВconjugated perfective: прочита́ю
Imperative СВone-off request: Прочитай !
Imperative НСВrepeated / invitation: Читай каждый день !
Negative orderalmost always НСВ: Не бери !

Aspect in the future

In the future, the imperfective is formed with буду + infinitive (process, repetition). The perfective conjugates like the present but has a future meaning (single action, result).

to read: future НСВ vs СВ

НСВ (process)
буду чита́ть
Завтра я буду чита́ть весь день.
СВ (result)
прочита́ю
Завтра я прочита́ю э́ту кни́гу.
НСВ habit
буду покупать
Я буду покупать хлеб каждый день.
СВ once
куплю́
Я куплю́ хлеб после рабо́ты.

Aspect in the imperative

In the imperative, the perfective asks for a specific one-off action (do it now). The imperfective invites a repeated, general action, or is used for invitations.

Perfective vs imperfective in the imperative

1

СВ — one-off request

Прочитай э́то письмо́ ! (now, once)

Купи хлеб, пожа́луйста.

2

НСВ — repetition / invitation

Читай каждый день ! (habit)

Заходите, сади́тесь ! (invitation)

💡⚠️ The negative order is almost always НСВ

To forbid or say “don’t do”, use the imperfective, even if the action is one-off.
Не бери э́ту кни́гу ! (НСВ — не возьми is rare)
Не опаздывай ! (don’t be late)
Не забывай о встре́че.

Ма́маХорошо́. Повтори всё и не нервничай !
ВитяСпаси́бо. Не забывай разбудить меня́ в семь.

Mum: What will you do tomorrow? — Vitya: I’ll be preparing for the exam, and in the evening I’ll read the last chapter. — Mum: Good. Revise everything and don’t be nervous! — Vitya: Thanks. Don’t forget to wake me at seven.
