The comparative
The comparative
More… than: the -ее form and the irregular comparatives
⚡Key points
Regular form→-ее: интереснее, красивее, быстрее
Irregulars→бо́льше, меньше, лучше, хуже, старше
Invariable→the simple comparative does not agree
чем→X бо́льше, чем Y
Genitive→X бо́льше Y (without чем)
The regular -ее form
For most adjectives and adverbs, the comparative is formed with -ее added to the stem. This form is invariable (it agrees neither in gender nor case).
Regular comparatives (-ее)
| интере́сный | интереснее | more interesting |
| краси́вый | красивее | more beautiful |
| бы́стрый | быстрее | faster |
| си́льный | сильнее | stronger |
| но́вый | новее | newer |
Irregular comparatives to memorise
| хоро́ший / хорошо́ | лучше | better |
| плохо́й / пло́хо | хуже | worse |
| большо́й / мно́го | бо́льше | bigger / more |
| ма́ленький / мало́ | меньше | smaller / less |

💡⚠️ “than”: чем or the genitive
Two equivalent constructions: with чем + nominative, or directly the genitive (without чем). A comma is required before чем.
Москва́ бо́льше, чем Казань. (with чем)
Москва́ бо́льше Казани. (genitive, same meaning)
Брат старше меня́. (my brother is older than me)
Dialogue: comparing two cities
Ле́наМосква́ бо́льше, чем твой го́род ?
ДанДа, намного бо́льше. Но у нас во́здух чище и жизнь дешевле.
Ле́наА зимо́й холоднее ?
ДанНет, теплее ! И лю́ди добрее.
Lena: Is Moscow bigger than your city? — Dan: Yes, much bigger. But our air is cleaner and life is cheaper. — Lena: And is it colder in winter? — Dan: No, warmer! And the people are kinder.
