The regular model: чита́ть

First-group verbs in -ать are the most numerous and most regular in Russian. They take the endings -ю / -ешь / -ет / -ем / -ете / -ют. The model verb is чита́ть (to read).

Verbs in -ять: same conjugation

Verbs in -ять follow exactly the same conjugation as -ать verbs. The only difference is the spelling of the infinitive and stem — the endings are identical.

Common -ять verbs

Exceptions: -ать verbs with consonant alternation

Some -ать verbs follow an irregular pattern with consonant alternation in all persons (not just the 1st). The most common: писа́ть (to write), with alternation с → ш.

A few very common verbs have alternation in all persons. To memorize case by case — there is no rule to guess them.
писа́ть → я пишу́ (с → ш)
плакать (to cry) → я плачу (к → ч)
искать (to search) → я ищу́ (ск → щ)
ехать (to go by vehicle) → я еду (х → д)
